Riverkeeper Doug Chapman

Community Outreach

Our Riverkeeper Douglas Chapman gives presentations throughout the watershed to raise awareness of issues and engage groups and individuals to become stewards of the river.

Speaker Series

Fraser Riverkeeper is working to organize a speaker to present a river topic of interest to high schools and university audiences. Topics include water quality trends, recreational paddling on the river, geo-heritage of the Fraser River, and biodiversity in the river — with an emphasis on pollution, clean water, and salmon.

Volunteer Outreach Program

Fraser Riverkeeper is working to develop a volunteer outreach program that consists of experienced educators committed to expanding Fraser Riverkeeper’s outreach program. Our goal is to engage youth. We will target youth when educating about water-related concepts.

High School/University Workshops

Fraser Riverkeeper is working to make a coordinated effort with local high schools, universities, and colleges in the areas of environmental law and policy, water protection, ecology, and environmental studies and sciences. Workshops will be used to reach green and sustainability clubs on campuses that activate fellow students to understand the issues and to develop solutions within the context of student life. From the workshops, Fraser Riverkeeper would, in coordination with workshop participants, develop and deliver seminars on watershed issues, with a possibility to gain credit when arranged in advance with school teachers or professors. Field trips and boat trips would be within the watershed and would be a part of the workshop supporting the seminar topic.

Internship Opportunities

Recognizing the multidisciplinary aspect of the non-governmental and non-profit world, student training would span subject focus from non-profit business sustainability to law and policy to environmental science. As Fraser Riverkeeper grows, expertise will allow for summer student employment opportunities. Fraser Riverkeeper will access government funding opportunities to employ students from upper levels of education, high school and beyond, and from all demographics.

Community Events

Encouraging people to get out and enjoy the river is the first step toward creating a river steward. Throughout the year we organize and participate in events to encourage people to celebrate their river and get involved in maintaining its ecological integrity. Fraser Riverkeeper is invited to participate in numerous events throughout the year. We typically bring a booth with relevant information and news as well as a staff or volunteers to answer questions or concerns about the river.
