EcoWatch

EcoWatch, in partnership with Waterkeeper Alliance, works to unite the voice of the grassroots environmental movement and mobilize millions of people to engage in democracy to protect human health and the environment.

Ecowatch is the first media source to focus exclusively on the news from more than 700 environmental organizations across the country.  In addition, the site showcases original content in its Insights column from leading national voices in the environmental movement, including EcoWatch’s advisory board members—Wendy Abrams, Ed Begley, Jr., Lester Brown, Laurie David, Paul Hawken, Randy Hayes, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., Phil Radford and Harvey Wasserman.

Ecowatch is a dedicated and neutral platform for grassroots environmental organizations that helps transform the ability of individuals to learn about environmental issues and take action. The news service provides timely access to relevant information that will motivate individuals to become engaged in their community, adopt sustainable practices and support strong environmental policy.

Teva Launches “Pair for a Foot”

On World Water Day this year, Teva launched “Pair for a Foot”, which will protect one linear foot of global waterways for every pair of Teva shoes and sandals sold in 2011. This long-term initiative will help protect over four million feet of global and Canadian waterways.

Teva’s campaign will support their ongoing partnership with Waterkeeper Alliance to create safe, clean watersheds. With Teva’s support, several major water-preservation projects will be kicking off in the summer of 2011, including Lake Ontario’s first beach preservation tour, Fraser Riverkeeper’s anti-polluter patrols of the Fraser River in British Columbia, and water quality sampling in the Ottawa River.

Derek Crawford – Memorium

Derek enjoyed fishing, from a young age, and since about age 16 has fished for salmon in the Fraser in various places from Vancouver to Hope, BC.  His skills grew as he found mentors and fellow fishermen along the way.  He fished for sockeye, pinks, coho, chum, spring salmon, sturgeon and steelhead as well.  He was an avid and ethical fisherman and became quite adept at various techniques.  He enjoyed both fishing while wading in the water and driving his 14 ft. blow-up Aquamarine boat to fish the lakes and rivers.  He also took up fly fishing recently.  He fished the local lakes, & the Fraser, Chilliwack/Vedder, Harrison, Nahatlatch, Chehalis, and his favorite ( for beauty) the Capilano rivers…   just to name a few.

He did a great deal of fishing over his 27 years, and passed on his knowledge to friends and acquaintances. He enjoyed sharing his catch, smoking his salmon using various recipes, and photographing the countryside, salmon, and other wildlife.

As far as conservation, he was especially interested in preservation of salmon stocks, ending fish farms or creating inland fish farms to prevent sea lice infestation, halting or controlling better the digging of gravel from the Fraser River which harms the eggs and small fish etc… anything which affects fish stocks.

-Deborah and John Crawford (parents)

Fraser Riverkeeper wishes to express our deepest sympathies to Derek’s family and friends, and thank them for their donations, which support our mission of conserving and protecting the Fraser River that their beloved Derek so cherished.

Foundational and Corporate Supporters

Fraser Riverkeeper would like to thank our supporters and friends. With your help, we can continue to dedicate to our mission of enhancing the health and beauty of the Fraser River.

Sponsors and Friends

We wish to thank the following organizations and businesses for their services and tools:

IM Rivers: IM Rivers granted us a free license for 2010 for the use of their interactive map tools. This yearly license allowed us to provide our website visitors with an educational map tool for finding points of interest along the Fraser and in BC.  Thank you, IM!

Earthpoint: Earthpoint gave us a free one-year subscription to utilize their tools, and we have found their xls to kml conversion tool and map icons very handy for creating our own Google Earth based map of data points. Thank you so much!

Chilliwack Valley Voice: Craig Hill has been a very supportive editor and journalist in covering our events and news to the Chilliwack community, which sits on the banks of the Fraser River. We want to thank Craig for his support and for getting the word out about our Earth Day cleanups–four years of cleaning up the Pegleg Gravel Bar.

Janet Helm

It’s not just giving. It’s giving that changes the world. You want to make a difference. Now it’s easy to take action. This is the motto of Janet Helm, with whom we are excited to be collaborating.

2% of Janet Helm’s sales of reusable water bottles, carafes and glasses, and rain barrels will go directly to Fraser Riverkeeper. Janet’s The Giving Project is based on the idea that gratitude enriches our everyday lives;  on June 6 this year, she began giving for 21 days.

A habit of giving and gratitude is excellent for everyone.

-Janet Helm

What better gift to give than the gift of clean water!

In Memory of Jimmy Christoff

Our Jimmy

Jimmy passed away last week after an intense effort to stabilize his condition. Jimmy was there when I was born and has been a true friend, mentor, uncle and revolutionary thinker for the 46 years I have had the pleasure of knowing him. Wet willies aside! His ground- breaking work, Remembering The Future,  opened my eyes to the state of the environment many years ago, before it was commonplace. Jim exposed toxic foods, industrial pollution, war, the police state and many other hot button topics, in his book, some 30 years ago!

We may have lost a front line advocate, but fortunately, he has helped to nurture a deep care and concern for the environment, in many of us. We shall continue his fight with the same grace and compassion he has carried for so many years.

In honor of this very special man, I would like to create a lasting legacy, so others who were not so fortunate to meet him, can still benefit from his teachings. Perhaps a bursary, to help those who wish to pursue a career in environmental stewardship might be one path.

Any other suggestions are welcome, as this special man must never be forgotten.

Jimmy, I miss you and take strength knowing your legacy is carried by many of us.

Peace Out,

Michael Chapman
