Author Call-out

We are seeking environmental authors to collaborate with us to promote our Reading Series, which is an effort to educate (and entertain!) members of the community on environmental issues. The Reading Series will consist of an author reading from one of his or her books focusing on wilderness, natural resources, conservation, or other similar topics. The book may be non-fiction, prose, or fiction. After a brief reading and discussion of the book, the author may answer questions, and sign and sell copies of his or her book.

We plan to hold one or two reading events per year, each one lasting about two hours.

Fraser Riverkeeper and partner H2O Plus launched our first of the series at H2O Plus’s store on Robson to celebrate World Water Day this year. Jordan Scott read from his poetry chapbook Silt–poems related to the Fraser River. During this series, H2O Plus donated a portion of sales during the in-store event to Fraser Riverkeeper and offered event shoppers a discounted coupon.

To get involved, please contact Mary at Fraser Riverkeeper.

Reading Series

Fraser Riverkeeper is implementing an exciting new book club that will connect environmental authors with friends and members of our organization. We plan to host several reading events this year, and would like to invite you to be a guest speaker at one of our meetings. If you are interested in donating a couple hours to a book club event, please contact Mary.

Authors may bring copies of their books to sign and sell. The venue will be casual and educational for the audience, and will be promoted among our members and contacts. Our venue will include the following:

1. A coffeehouse, pub, or other location decided upon by Fraser Riverkeeper and the author.

2. A guest author giving a brief presentation of his or her book, and being open to a question-and-answer period.

3. A speaker from Fraser Riverkeeper introducing the author and tying up the event.

4. A place at the venue for the author to sell and sign books.

5. A growing network of author and reader relationships, which will enhance Fraser Riverkeeper’s community-based educational and advocacy programs.

Public Right to Know

The public has a right to know about the state of its river. It is crucial that we share all investigations/findings with the public. FRK disseminates information to the public through newsletters, website  and the media, including information pamphlets and brochures, research documents, public conferences, and student training/internship opportunities.

Network of Eyes and Ears: We are reaching out to people and building alliances as well as a network of eyes and ears throughout the watershed.’

We will be expanding our “public right to know” campaign in the future, to include water quality reports, an expansive news section, and more community events!

Community Outreach

Our Riverkeeper Douglas Chapman gives presentations throughout the watershed to raise awareness of issues and engage groups and individuals to become stewards of the river.

Speaker Series

Fraser Riverkeeper is working to organize a speaker to present a river topic of interest to high schools and university audiences. Topics include water quality trends, recreational paddling on the river, geo-heritage of the Fraser River, and biodiversity in the river — with an emphasis on pollution, clean water, and salmon.

Volunteer Outreach Program

Fraser Riverkeeper is working to develop a volunteer outreach program that consists of experienced educators committed to expanding Fraser Riverkeeper’s outreach program. Our goal is to engage youth. We will target youth when educating about water-related concepts.

High School/University Workshops

Fraser Riverkeeper is working to make a coordinated effort with local high schools, universities, and colleges in the areas of environmental law and policy, water protection, ecology, and environmental studies and sciences. Workshops will be used to reach green and sustainability clubs on campuses that activate fellow students to understand the issues and to develop solutions within the context of student life. From the workshops, Fraser Riverkeeper would, in coordination with workshop participants, develop and deliver seminars on watershed issues, with a possibility to gain credit when arranged in advance with school teachers or professors. Field trips and boat trips would be within the watershed and would be a part of the workshop supporting the seminar topic.

Internship Opportunities

Recognizing the multidisciplinary aspect of the non-governmental and non-profit world, student training would span subject focus from non-profit business sustainability to law and policy to environmental science. As Fraser Riverkeeper grows, expertise will allow for summer student employment opportunities. Fraser Riverkeeper will access government funding opportunities to employ students from upper levels of education, high school and beyond, and from all demographics.

Community Events

Encouraging people to get out and enjoy the river is the first step toward creating a river steward. Throughout the year we organize and participate in events to encourage people to celebrate their river and get involved in maintaining its ecological integrity. Fraser Riverkeeper is invited to participate in numerous events throughout the year. We typically bring a booth with relevant information and news as well as a staff or volunteers to answer questions or concerns about the river.
